Mark 1:16-17: Jesus called ordinary men to do an extra ordinary job. He said “come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people.” What did these ordinary fishermen think and expect when they dropped their nets to join an itinerant teacher? What we discover from this invitation is that first of all we must join Jesus. We can’t expect to accomplish anything for God if we are not willing to abandon our self interest in return for the joy of doing His will. Self-aggrandizing plans of fortune and fame need to be set aside for a far better eternal reward. The second discovery is that Jesus wanted to bring in people, he wanted people to enter into his net of the Kingdom of God. He didn’t say join me and I’ll teach you how to transform a society, a culture or a government. His plan was to change people first and this would in turn change their society.
This call to follow Jesus still stands today. Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people.
