Building, digging, laying – Being a Follower

I love the image Jesus uses to teach us what it takes to be his follower.

He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn’t shake it, because it was well built.
Luke 6:48 CSB

Build, dug, and laid are rich in meaning and convey the idea of forethought and persistent effort. We fool ourselves if we think we can lightheartedly follow Jesus. In our world today the longest standing buildings were well planned out and given a foundation that can not be shaken. We all know stories to the contrary of buildings built on imperfect ground.

Everything in my flesh fights against this principle of building, digging and laying a solid foundation for a lasting spiritual life. Each day requires an effort to maintain the pace in my spiritual life with Christ.

What is a good first step toward building a solid spiritual life? An excellent habit to develop is to spend time in the Word of God daily. It doesn’t have to be long, but it should be regular. Reading daily from God’s Word helps us get to know Him better and to learn more about what it means to follow Him. Happy building! Get in there, dig deep and lay that foundation to go far.
